When a Bike Part Is Worth Making in Titanium
September 6, 2026
Titanium has a reputation that runs ahead of the engineering. It is an excellent material for a short list of bike parts and an expensive mistake on everything else. The decision comes down to whether the part is limited by strength or by stiffness.
The numbers that matter
| Aluminum 6061-T6 | Aluminum 7075-T6 | Titanium Grade 5 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength | About 310 MPa | About 570 MPa | About 950 MPa |
| Density | 2.70 g/cm3 | 2.81 g/cm3 | 4.43 g/cm3 |
| Stiffness (Young’s modulus) | About 69 GPa | About 72 GPa | About 114 GPa |
| Relative material cost | Baseline | 2 to 3 times | 10 times or more |
| Relative machining time | Baseline | Slightly more | Two to four times |
Read the stiffness row twice. Titanium is stronger than aluminum by a wide margin but only about 1.6 times stiffer, while being 1.6 times denser. For a part whose job is to not flex, titanium buys you almost nothing per gram.
Where titanium earns its price
Bolts, axles and pivot pins. Small parts, high stress, and the size is set by strength rather than by stiffness. A titanium thru axle is meaningfully lighter than a steel one and does not need a coating to survive.
Parts in contact with sweat and road salt. Titanium does not need anodizing to resist corrosion. On a part that lives under a saddle or behind a bottom bracket, that is a real durability argument, not a marketing one.
Short runs of boutique components. When you are making 50 pieces and selling them on the strength of the material, the cost per part matters less than the story, and the story is genuine.
Springs and fasteners in fatigue. Titanium has better fatigue behavior than aluminum at the same stress level, and aluminum has no true fatigue limit, so parts that see millions of cycles benefit.
Where aluminum stays the right answer
Stems, faceplates and brake mounts. The envelope is set by the bar, the steerer and the caliper. You cannot shrink the part, so the extra strength has nowhere to go, and the density penalty shows up on the scale.
Anything sold in five colors. Titanium’s anodizing palette is voltage-driven and fixed. If your brand runs a color range, aluminum is the only sensible base.
Anything at volume. Ten times the material cost and three times the cutting time is not a rounding error on a 500 piece order.
What changes at the shop
Titanium cuts slowly and holds heat in the cut rather than carrying it away in the chip, so tools wear fast and the part can move if the setup is not rigid. Expect fewer shops to quote it, longer lead times and a price that is dominated by machine hours rather than material.
A shop that quotes titanium at close to its aluminum rate has either not read the drawing or has not cut much titanium.
The honest test
Ask one question about the part: if you doubled its strength, could you make it smaller? If the answer is yes, titanium is worth pricing. If the size is fixed by a standard interface, a bearing, a bar diameter or a mounting pattern, stay in aluminum and spend the money on better geometry.
Send both materials on the same RFQ and ask for the weight and the price of each. The comparison is usually decisive, and it is cheaper to find out before the first batch than after it.
Frequently asked questions
Is a titanium part always lighter than an aluminum one?
No. Titanium is denser than aluminum, about 4.43 against 2.70 grams per cubic centimeter. It is only lighter when the higher strength lets you use much less material, which is true for bolts and axles and false for a part whose size is set by stiffness or by the interface it bolts to.
Which titanium grade do bike parts use?
Grade 5, Ti-6Al-4V, for anything structural. Grade 2 is commercially pure, softer and easier to form, and turns up in bottle cages and non-critical hardware.
Can titanium be anodized in colors?
Yes, and the process is different from aluminum. There is no dye. The oxide layer bends light, so the color comes from the voltage used. That means the palette is fixed and colors cannot be matched to a Pantone.
